“Tenements that have stood beside each other as companions for decades find echoes of themselves in the streets below. As my interest is in painting the exterior of the tenements then this moment of vulnerability and exposure in the lives of two of the tenement dwellers becomes a sort of street theatre played out in the shadow of the buildings with the reflection of the colours in the sandstone illuminating the scene. The interior life of the tenements is discovered though a glimpse of these figures and their interiority is glimpsed through their posture and facial expressions, through their eyes and perhaps through the pages of a book held close to a chest. If the tenement and figures are all characters in the story of this painting then their unknowable and unseen inner lives become more known through our observation of them as we try to decipher this moment”
